Junior Firefighters Program

A program for Boonton high school students (ages 16โ€“18) offering introductory firefighting and rescue training alongside experienced volunteers โ€” a head start on a calling, and on a career.

What Junior Firefighters Do

  • โœ“Respond to fire calls alongside experienced firefighters in support roles
  • โœ“Perform critical support outside the fireground perimeter
  • โœ“Attend the Morris County Fire Academy (summer) for accelerated certification
  • โœ“Complete the path to full membership and certification at age 18

Requirements

Age: 16โ€“18 years old
Residency: Must live in Boonton
GPA: Minimum 2.5 GPA required
Parental Permission: Written parental/guardian consent required
Commitment: Genuine commitment to service and the program

Are juniors allowed inside burning structures?โ–พ
No. Junior firefighters do not enter burning structures. They perform essential support roles outside the fireground.
How does the program fit around school?โ–พ
Drills and activities are scheduled around school commitments. Academic performance is a priority โ€” the minimum GPA requirement reflects that.
Does this help with college applications?โ–พ
Yes. The program demonstrates community service, leadership, and responsibility โ€” qualities that strengthen any college application.
What happens at age 18?โ–พ
Juniors who complete the program and meet all requirements can become full members of the Boonton Fire Department, certified and ready to respond.
